There’s a public meeting on Wednesday 2nd February 2011 at 7:30pm about the threat of closure hanging over Leyton Green Clinic (which has been serving the people of Leyton since 1932).
Speakers: John Cryer MP, plus Clinic users and health workers
Where: The Seddon Centre, 33 Clyde Place, Leyton E10 5AS
(off Capworth Street, Leyton take turning at the Lord Clyde Pub)
In partnership with Sacred Roots, an organisation working to foster understanding and co-operation between people of different faiths, we have an exciting and varied programme for this two-day event. We have combined Transition’s winter food event with a celebration of food from different cultures, and added music, poetry, story-telling, workshops, stalls and a film: A Farm for the Future.
We have some wonderful speakers, including Polly Higgins, known as ‘The Planet’s Lawyer’, and Jagdeesh Singh from the Sikh Environment Network. Anton Rosenfeld from Garden Organic will talk about growing ‘exotic’ vegetables in the UK. It’s not all carrots and parsnips!
There will be workshops for children and adults, seed-sowing for all, and a chance to learn about different food choices and traditions.
A LARA member recently moved into Colworth Road and discovered they have three quite large fish (10-12 inches) in their pond. They intend to dispose of said pond, but wondered if any other member can provide a home for the fish? If you can, please let us know and we’ll pass the info on.
We’re on the lookout for pictures of the 2010 Leytonstone Festival. With so many varied events this year, there were plenty of fantastic photo opportunites.
If you took a great picture of any of the festival events, please send them to us at events@leytonstoneresidents.org.uk.
In September we’ll put the best ones we receive to a vote, with prizes awarded to the winners.
Many Leytonstone residents put part of the blame for the High Road’s decline squarely on the shoulders of the one-way system which was implemented as part of the M11 extension works and subsequent Tesco development. In September 2009, Leyton and Wanstead Lib Dems posted this on their website…
Some time ago leytonstone FOCUS team, reported that an independent review of the much debated one-way system in Leytonstone was to be undertaken. Having seen no indication of the outcome, the Council was asked for an update on the position. It now appears that the Council could not fund either the survey or any proposed works. They are now in discussions with the developers of Stratford City with a view to them agreeing to fund the project under a Section 106 agreement of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. The Council is continuing discussions with Stratford City and FOCUS will let you have further news when available. In the meantime, the Council has confirmed that Transport for London (TfL) plans to review the co-ordination of all traffic signal installations around Leytonstone Town Centre. No timescale has been confirmed.
So, it looks like nothing is going to happen anytime soon unless Westfield decide to give us some money. Given the current economic climate, that seems unlikely!
We are asking the whole community to support us in our call for a fair level of police resourcing in Waltham Forest.
Show your support by signing our online petition to help us secure 120 extra police officers for the borough.
An ambitious target has been set of 5,000 signatures to be collected for the back-up petition by November 2009.
As well as signing the online petition, residents can show their support by completing a postcard found at Council buildings and GP surgeries across the Borough, or at one of our roadshows.
The next roadshow taking place is at Leyton Mills on Friday 30 October from 10am – 3pm.

Sarah Innes had kindly summarised the main points from the Aircraft Noise meeting and forwarded to Councillor Marie Pye as the Labour Party was not represented:
The presenters were very well informed. The problem is not only not going to go away, the increase in noise we have experienced this summer is the tip of the iceberg. I briefly summarise some of the main points below that are of immediate concern and require immediate action…
Number of flights is set to to increase by at least 150%.
Permission was granted by Newham in July for an increase in flights from 70 to 120,000 this year, and then to 170,000 next year. Based on the past track record, these limits will be exceeded by a considerable percentage. Further changes were made to London City Airport as a result of planning application for extra flights submitted to the London Borough of Newham. This application was not referred to Waltham Forest Council
Increase in noise is not only due to the number of fights, but the type of aircraft.
The airport is allowing jets rather than turbo props. The result is a wider path that comes right over our borough from noisier aircraft. This trend is set to continue. This may lie behind the first reason for increase in noise set out in your press release: London City Airport recently changed the direction of some of their flights particularly from Runway 28.
The increase in noise comes also from an increase in flights coming in to land from the Heathrow stacks at Chesham and at Epping.
The number of these flights is also increasing. Air traffic control at Heathrow airport has been redirecting a considerable number of planes due to weather conditions during the summer. It may be more than just the weather … because of the increase in flights being stacked, planes are being released earlier from stacks and have to take a longer detour before joining the flight path to land.
An increase in noise is also coming from helicopters.
A recent GLA meeting discovered that many of these flights are not, as commonly supposed, mainly from police helicopters, but from commercial flights “sightseeing” or going to private functions.
Private jets taking off from City airport are also increasing and are not counted.
Waltham Forest has the THIRD highest number of planes flying over it compared with all the other London Boroughs.
The problem is compounded by the fact that no one authority is responsible for overall aircraft noise.
Different noise maps are produced for individual flights from London City Airport, and from Heathrow. Noise from all the other aircraft are not taken into calculations and there is no overall noise mapping. The CAA, BAA, City Airport, et al all pass the buck to each other and refuse to take responsibility or indeed measure anything that accurately reflects cumulative noise.
The level of pollution exceeds current EU limits and will fail the new, higher limits from January this year.
The result is, according to one figure, that over 7000 Londoners die earlier as a result of air pollution per year.

This first year for LARA has seen us achieve a lot – we have a fully functional website, a committee which works well together, we have increased our membership and also taken part in several local events. More help is always needed though and the AGM provides an opportunity for LARA members to put themselves forward for a position on the committee. So, if you feel that you could make a positive contribution and would like to help make Leytonstone a better place, please put your name forward either by returning the form enclosed with this flyer or by visiting the LARA website. At the AGM, attending members will be given the opportunity to vote for the candidates. There will also be an opportunity to raise general issues and join LARA. So, even if you’re not up for a committee position or not currently a member, please come along anyway!
Unfortunately, personal commitments have meant that Robin Williams has had to step down as LARA Chairman, but he has generously indicated that he will try to help us out in some capacity in the future. The rest of the committee would like to thank Robin for all his hard work – without his efforts, LARA quite simply would not exist today. Fortunately, Vice Chair Jenny Smith has agreed to step into Robin’s shoes for now.
The committee currently comprises:
Chair/Secretary
Jenny Smith
Membership Secretary
Daphne O’Neill
Vice Chair/Webmaster
Carl Moss
Treasurer
Hugh Nettleton
Events Secretary
Phil Wray
Green Spaces
Sarah Innes
We would also like to expand the committee to include positions covering Planning Control, Safer Neighbourhoods and Street Service Issues.
To put yourself forward for a position on the committee, please complete the form below, stating your name, address, telephone number and the position(s) you would like to be nominated for.
